The Art of Moath al-Alwi
A Ship From Guantánamo is the award-winning documentary by filmmakers Veena Rao and Dara Kell about Moath al-Alwi’s creation of his ship models. They comment, “The fact that Mr. al-Alwi is no longer able to share his work is one of the reasons we wanted to make this film; as independent documentary filmmakers, we know that the power of our work is fully realized only when we can share it with an audience.” HeaRT is proud to have supported this documentary with a grant.

The Guantanamo Artwork and Testimony of Moath al-Alwi: Deaf Walls Speak presents an insider’s view of artmaking in Guantánamo, the world’s most notorious prison, as self-expression and protest, and to stage a fundamental human rights claim that has been denied by law and politics: the right to be recognized as human. The book juxtaposes an essay written by Moath himself and his artwork with essays that situate his work with legal, political, aesthetic, and material contexts.
